Elementary school counselors are members of the helping profession. We love to help! Counselors work with teachers and parents to help students socially, emotionally, behaviorally, and/or academically.

Individual Counseling

Students are referred by parents, teachers, or themselves and meet with the school counselor weekly or as needed to work through the issue of concern. Individual counseling only takes place with parental permission, and confidentiality is maintained. The topics that the school counselor addresses with students includes (but is not limited to) the following:

depression grief decision making
anxiety/stress organization skills problem solving
self-control divorce mediation
anger management self-esteem manners

Group Counseling

Groups of several different topics are facilitated by the school counselor. At the beginning of the year, a new student group takes place. Divorce, anger management, grief and social skills groups take place throughout the year. Other counseling groups may be formed on an as needed basis. As with individual counseling, parental permission is needed and confidentiality is maintained.

Classroom Guidance

Every classroom is visited at least once a month by the school counselor. Some of the topics covered by the school counselor in classroom guidance are:

sharing career education study skills
responsibility cooperation peer pressure
respecting diversity friendship manners
self-esteem

In addition to these, other interventions that the elementary school counselor is involved with include Red Ribbon Week, kindergarten screening, IEP and IAT meetings. You may also see your counselor orienting new students, coordinating testing, observing students, and consulting with staff.

The school counselor is here for all the students and strives to serve them, help them, and advocate for them so that their living and learning experiences can be more meaningful and positive.
